Sin City

(18) Starring: Loads of people!

Wow. If you're of a nervous disposition and find violence, killing, swearing offensive, this isn't the film for you. If you can look past that, however, wow is this film fantastic.

First off, the visuals. Simply stunning. The whole film was shot in front of a green screen, and it's beautiful to look at, the black and white (with only occasional splashes of red!) - wow. Hats off to the director for one of the most beautiful films ever committed to screen.

The stories are slightly...OK, a hell of a lot less beautiful. But no less fascinating. The cast is flawless, even Brittany Murphy's acting isn't too awful, Mickey Rourke is brilliant. Elijah Wood doesn't speak but makes a surprisingly good villian.

The stories, three in total, are violent, bloody, not pretty in the slightest - and totally mesmorising, and tie together well.

I've gushed about this film enough, what are you waiting for? If this is your kind of comic book adaptation then get yourself to the cinema right now for a great film experience.

Sin City scores a sin-tillating (sorry...) 10/10.

Kingdom of Heaven

(15) Starring: Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, Professor Lupin! ;)

Set in the 12th century around the time of the crusades, Kingdom of Heaven depicts a war in Jerusalem - the Kingdom of Heaven, as it were.

The film starts off with Liam Neeson finding his son, Orlando, then promptly getting struck by an arrow. As it always is... which leads to Orlando going off to Jerusalem to look after the king, then, LOTR-stylee, saving the city from a massive, ugly-looking army.

It's an odd film, let me say that much. It's likeable enough, though. Nothing can save the fact that Orlando Bloom isn't a wonderful actor, but he's adequate enough for the film, and in a nutshell that's basically what I could use to sum up the film. Average.

The story's a good one though, I just feel it was lacking in pace in places, the love story is utterly pointless tbh, but then, they sometimes are, and let's leave it at that.

6/10

Ray
(15) Starring: Jamie Foxx

"Ray" follows the true story of Ray Charles life, through the first 15
years of his career, starting as a youngster moving from Florida to
Seattle to begin his life.

He wasn't a very nice person when he was young, that much is clear!
Drugs, adultery... and as Ray himself approved the story, he'd probably
be the first to admit it, I'm guessing. But he sorted his life out in
the 60s, and became one of the world's best loved musicians - he was a
genius.

Jamie Foxx is simply outstanding and thoroughly deserved his Oscar win
for this film. He looks so much like the late Ray Charles, it is scary.
Not only that, but that is actually him playing the piano! He doesn't
sing - why attempt it, frankly? But Foxx has Ray Charles the man down
to a fine art, including the mannerisms of his play, it's fantastic.

I did enjoy this film...I just can't put my finger on why I didn't love
it. But I'd highly recommend this to anyone, even if you've never heard
Ray Charles music before (and if that's the case, I feel sorry for you
;))

Ray scores 8/10

Mr and Mrs Smith
(15) Starring: Angelina Jolie, Angelina Jolie, and some guy named Brad Pitt? Oh, and Angelina Jolie...

Well this film has been hyped so much I think everyone knows the story
of the film by now...Mr and Mrs Smith are a married couple completely
oblivious to each others career as hired assassins.

And that's it, plot-wise. Oh, and they end up having to try and kill each other. But I don't want to spoil why.

It's good enough, really. The jokes aren't thick and fast, and both
main stars have done much better performances than this, but the film
oozes style and sexiness from every pore, and it's a testament to the
actors that they can manage this without ever excelling.

Whatever the real life love affairs between these two, they sure do sizzle with chemistry, that much is true.

It's a nice film to pass a couple of hours but it won't keep you on the
edge of your seat, or dazzle you with effects or action. But it's
definitely worth a view, especially, lads, if you like that nice Miss
Jolie in black PVC.

But I never told you that. Cos I'm completely innocent...

7/10.

Batman Begins
(Cert 12A) Starring: Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Katie Holmes.

Now I've always disliked Batman. As a superhero, he was always
sub-par in my eyes. He had no super-powers, and, as portrayed in all
series and films to date, he was camp... not how superheroes should be,
to be honest.

DC had a LOT to compete with, too, Marvel showing how it's done in
style with both Spiderman and X-Men films being of superb quality, and
those two franchises in particular are really the benchmark for comic
book movies.

Step forward the new, darker, broodier Batman.

And it's *almost* up there with the aforementioned Marvel movies...

Christian Bales' Bruce Wayne is menacing, and how Batman should have
always been in the movies to date. You can really believe he's the dark
knight he's supposed to be.

Michael Caine is...well, Michael Caine, in his element. He plays
Alfred, an English butler - typecast or what? But he does get most of
the funny lines and delivers them with his usual flawless timing.

The key casting for me, Bale aside, was both Morgan Freeman and Liam
Neeson. The former being gadget man Lucius Fox, and he oozes star
quality in every role but he seems to enjoy every second of his
character - fantastic.

The latter, Liam Neeson, is Ducard, the person who recruits Bruce Wayne
to the League of Shadows, but more about that when you've seen it! He
is, however, a great villain, one I never expected to see Neeson play
but nevertheless he does so brilliantly.

Now to the weak point...and there is only really one to speak of. Now I
would be the first to admit that Katie Holmes is pleasing to the eye,
but again, as with Kingdom of Heaven (see above), the love story in
this film seems to have no point to it. It's resolved very quickly at
the end, there's very little of it in the film at all and it would've
been best leaving it out. Plus - I'm sorry, Katie, but your acting
leaves something to be desired at the moment... however, I've seen
worse.

The opening isn't as good as the rest of the movie but stick with it -
the last 90 minutes or so is top class storytelling, acting - and DARK.
Really really dark.

And it's fantastic.

I see a bright future for the Batman movies with Bale, if they keep
this direction. The knowing smile I had at the end as the next villain
was revealed...I can't wait for the sequel!

Batman Begins - 9/10

Kung Fu Hustle
Cert 12A

You'll have to forgive me - I've no idea at all who is in this film.
What I DO know is that, first things first, this is a subtitled film.

Chinese, in fact.

That takes nothing away from it though, as a lot of the humour is
visual. There are, however, a few references to other movies - look out
for the Spiderman quote, for instance - but it honestly doesn't detract
from the film.

It's ridiculously silly at times, but not silly enough to keep there
being a plot, and is definitely a great way to spend 2 hours and a few
quid.

I wish I had more to say about it but I don't, I'm afraid, other than to say - if you like silly films - go watch :D

7.5/10

Classic Nutshell Review
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Cert 15 - Starring: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, Kirsten Dunst

Why? Well, months after seeing this film, I still feel almost
evangelistic about my desire for other people to see it. It's so
different to any film I'm ever seen before or since.

In a nutshell (see what I did there? ;)) - Jim Carrey meets Kate
Winslet, they have a fling, fall out, Kate goes to get her memory
erased, Jim does same to spite her and decides that some things are
best left as they are...

It sounds strange, and I'll not lie, it is. The plot, though, is
flawlessly written and a testament to it's writer. The acting, too is
almost perfect, Jim Carrey is a revelation in a serious role. The way
the two main characters remember each other in Joel's mind is funny at
times but the message is clear - relationships are painful but they
make us stronger, and you'll always have Paris (or good memories, what,
I'm trying to be philosophical!).

But they're not the only people to discover that in the film, and the
supporting cast are just as brilliant, as we see them during the
"erasing" process and find out why Kirsten Dunst's character is the way
she is with her employer.

Honestly, you will not have seen anything like this film. It is a
masterpiece, and whilst not the greatest film of all time, it isn't that
far away. Personally I hope it's recognised as such in future, too.

Go see it right now. If you've seen it already, see it again.

Simply stunning - 10/10

Aaaaaaand on that note:

Wedding Crashers (15)
(Starring: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN!! :D)

My apologies. Chris Walken is just ace, though, in everything. Ever.

I digress.

What do you get when you cross two of the funniest actors in the business, mixed with two very attractive ladies, and a GOD of cinema?

Comic genius.

Wedding Crashers is the funniest film I've seen in a long long time, I
was grinning from start to finish. Absolutely brilliant from the word
go.

As you might guess from the title, Vaughn and Wilson are wedding
crashers, creating new characters for themselves at each one. After 17
weddings in the summer season, Vaughn persuades his partner in crime to
go for the big one - the Senator's daughters wedding. The wedding of
the year.

And successfully they do so - and what follows is two, very contrasting love stories until the truth comes out.

I'll say no more about the plot - but look for a hilarious cameo
appearance from Will Ferrell near the end. Brilliant stuff throughout,
Wedding Singers gets a 9/10 score from me, for the few times I wasn't
laughing.

Hey - I'm harsh, but fair ;)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Cert PG - Starring Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore

Fans of the original will probably have mixed feelings about this
updated version. As I consider myself one of them, I'll explain why.

The original had a very feel-good, kid film feel to it, and was very
good at what it did. Gene Wilder was a "nice" guy Willy Wonka, the
Oompa Loompa's were cute little things with green hair and orange faces
and nice songs, and you had a happy ending. Sugar-overload, much like
the factory, but it worked.

Fast forward to 2005 and the new film, then, and you have Johnny Depp,
a rather sinister looking Oompa Loompa and...well, still a happy ending
but a rather different way of getting to it.

Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a much different
film. The film does take things from the book, it also dismisses others
(such as the original tease of Charlie not getting the factory at the
end) and adds others (Christopher Lee is typically excellent as the, if
I remember correctly, the never-before-seen father of Willy Wonka)

The back-story is something very different, in my opinion, but it works
so well at explaining why Willy Wonka is the recluse he is, and is a
great addition. Moreover, having Wilbur Wonka as a dentist, explains a
lot about Willy's obsession with chocolate.

Anyway, to the actors. Freddie Highmore (Charlie) is destined for good
things, much like Dakota Fanning in the same ilk. The rest of the
children must be good actors too because they play annoying little
brats, and well, they were annoying little brats...

But the absolute star of the show is the man himself. I firmly believe
that Johnny Depp is right up there with the best actors at the moment.
He is the perfect choice for Willy Wonka, giving the character the
sinister edge you get in the book that Gene Wilder totally missed. It's
just brilliant.

My one complaint with this film, that I much prefer from the old one,
is the Oompa Loompa sequences are far too long and not all that
entertaining. Though they are more sinister than the first film - well,
I guess I just didn't enjoy their part in the film as much.

But, there is a good film for both children and adults here, and I
would recommend this for fans of the book. To me, the characters, if
perhaps not the whole story, are much more faithful to Roald Dahl's
interpretation, and for that I can only applaud Tim Burton & Johnny
Depp.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory gets a delicious (sorry) 8.5/10

Dont worry - just as long as you don't say that the Fantastic Four film is 'fantastic'.
This is because it isnt.

I have no idea what I am talking about!

Fantastic Four
Cert PG - Starring: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Julian McMahon

*Sigh*

Maybe it's just a comic book movie overload for me lately but I just didn't find this interesting at all, and passable at best.

But let's go through the motions anyway - Reid Richards, accompanied by
his former girlfriend Susan Storm (Alba), his best friend Ben Grimm
(Michael Chiklis) and Susan's brother Johnny (Chris Evans - no, not the
ginger one) are the Fantastic Four, who are given superpowers by a
freak storm in space, which they are trying to research. Victor Von
Doom (the actually surely evil Julian McMahon?), who bankrolled the
project, is also caught in the storm and becomes the evil Dr Doom who
the Four must battle yada yada yada.

I dunno. It's good enough. The acting isn't bad. The effects are good,
the plot so paper-thin you could drive through it...but it's
entertaining enough.

But, having seen the superlative Batman Begins earlier this year, this
compares in no way whatsoever. Sure, it has Jessica Alba but she spends
half the film being invisible - in what way does that a good movie
make?!

(Sorry)

I'm struggling so I'll just score this thing and move on. 5/10. Mediocre. Not bad. Average. NEXT!

War of the Worlds
Cert 12A - Starring: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Tim Robbins, Justin Chatwin

If you'll give me a second - I have to get over the previous review ending on such a sour note.

Ah. There we go.

OK, I realise this was the big summer blockbuster but I've only just seen it today (it's still Summer...just... ;))

OK - just for the record, an EMP would render anything even remotely
electronic useless, no matter whether it's on or off. Spot the
deliberate mistake a few minutes in, when an EMP is triggered. I'll let
you in on a secret - VIDEO CAMERAS WOULD NOT WORK!

Nitpick over - let's move on ;)

In a nutshell, the war of the worlds is precisely that - Mars is
invading...and wow are they doing it in style. 100ft tripods walking
through America, zapping everything, exploding buildings...one thing
that could be said about this film is that the special effects are out
of this world (ouch...), ILM have really outdone themselves this time.

The acting, even from Tom Cruise, is good. Dakota Fanning is her typical
brilliant self, and there's a whole lot of worried people there too.
Tim Robbins steals the show for me though, playing a lonely psychotic
guy (who dies off-screen, which is unfortunate!)

However, this being THE blockbuster of 2005, and being THE Spielberg
film of 2005, it inevitably comes with THE typical cheesy Hollywood
ending, and it ruins 2 hours of a really great film knowing exactly
what happens at the end.

It's a great touch to get Morgan Freeman as the narrator, he says
exactly two lines in the whole film and still oozes more class than
most of the cast put together... but the ending spoiled it. That said,
I'd recommend the film, most definitely. It won't live up to the hype -
no film ever does (except perhaps Sin City...) but it's worth the watch.

8/10 from me. Great sci-fi stuff, and even Tom Cruise is passable at acting. Who'd've thought it!

(If these reviews have been particularly scathing, I apologise ;))
