Anthony Wilson, the music mogul behind some of Manchester's most successful bands, has died of cancer.
The Salford-born entrepreneur, who managed New Order, Joy Division and the Happy Mondays, was diagnosed last year during a routine visit to the doctor.
The 57-year-old, who launched Factory records and the Hacienda nightclub, underwent emergency surgery in January to remove a kidney.
He passed away on Friday evening in hospital.
Doctors recommended he take the drug Sutent after chemotherapy failed to beat the disease, but the NHS refused to fund the £3,500-a-month treatment.
However, members of the Happy Mondays and other acts he supported over the years stepped in and started a fund to help pay for it.

Gutted, I started finding out about him after watching the film '24 Hour Party People' - him being the main character (played by Steve Coogan)

Its not until you read up about him that you realise how many great bands he got started. Put simply, pretty much the whole Manchester scene (and many great DJs) owe their career to him for starting it all.

A truly underrated legend. :(

Bloody hell I just saw this. :(

I knew he was very seriously ill and didn't think he'd get through the year, but it's still hit home hard.

'Madchester' was the first scene I got involved with. Reminds me of uni and then moving to London (where Grunge and other assorted American guitar bands stole my heart and attention).

So sad to hear this. He did so much for musicians in the north - I'm not trying to start a divide here, I just happen to think it's true.

RIP
