Tottenham are set to seal the signing of Dutch star Edgar Davids from Internazionale.
The 32-year-old has fallen out of favour with Inter coach Roberto Mancini and the Nerazzurri have agreed to release him on a free transfer.
Spurs coach Martin Jol is delighted to be on the cusp of landing his fellow countryman.
"He is one of the most versatile midfielders, a playmaker, a ball-winner with great stamina and huge charisma and one of the best midfielders to come out of Holland in the last 10 years," said Jol.
"This is a player who went to Barcelona when they were middle of the league and took them close to winning the title.
"It's terrific that he is joining us. This is the player we have spoken about who will lift the team's performance. We have a young squad with an average age of 23 and I believe Edgar will come in and lead by example."
Davids, who has 70 Dutch caps to his name, is anxious to secure first team football in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.
The Surinam-born star will arrive in England in the next 24 hours to finalise personal terms and undergo a routine medical at White Hart Lane.
England will be the fourth country Davids has played in his illustrious career after spells in Holland with Ajax, Italy with Juventus, Inter and Milan, and Spain with Barcelona.
Both Everton and Middlesbrough had shown an interest in Davids earlier in the summer, but the lure of London looks to have won the day.

Norway 1 - 2 Scotland FT

The Scots still have a chance to make the World Cup finals after a stunning last minute win in Oslo :)

^^ Scotland score above - 'twas Norway who scored in the last minute, not the Scots. So now stunning last minute win ;)

On a better note though - WEDNESDAY FINALLY WON!!!! :D :D :D

Not sure if this belongs in this thread or in the Celebrity Thread. Can you move it please, Bev or Scotty, if it's in the wrong place?

14 September 2005

An international academic conference on celebrity is debating whether David Beckham is a modern Messiah. The three-day conference in Scotland will discuss whether the Beckham brand can bring salvation in the modern world.Delegates will hear how the England captain is steeped in pseudo-Christian iconography.

Paisley University lecturer Carlton Brick said: "Beckham the brand is all about salvation, redemption and even resurrection.

"It is not me that is saying Beckham is a pseudo-Christ figure, but it is how he is often portrayed and how he often portrays himself.

"The redemption came in 1998 after he was sent off in the World Cup. He was even pictured in a magazine looking Christ-like.

"Then he was expected to be the saviour of English football.

"When he broke his foot a picture of it appeared in a newspaper and we were all asked to lay our hands on it to heal him."

He also points to Beckham's crucifix tatoos as examples of his use of Christian symbols.

The Real Madrid midfielder and his wife were portrayed as Jesus and Mary in a nativity display at Madame Tussauds.

Dr Brick will put his argument to 90 delegates attending the three-day conference at Paisley University.

I think I've heard it all now. Please tell me this is a spoof.

:D

So we'll see you at the world cup, right Chris?

Ohhhh that's right - Wales ain't there! ;)

I'm actually rather sad we're the only home nation who made it to the
finals, (mostly because they were all in our group except Scotland!)
and will be a shame no-one else is flying the British flag. Not even
the Southern Irish made it :(

France did though

Actually, against all my better judgement, I really hope Man United beat Chelsea this week, purely to stop Jose Mourinho being plastered all over the press being his usual arrogant obnoxious self ;)

GO ON YOU ARSENAL!!!

;)

I'm rooting for them to win the Champions League final at any rate, so I don't really mind which way Tottenham don't make it in, sorry Bev ;) ;)

I will explain, though, that I only want Arsenal to do well for the sake of Premier League competition next year, because if Arsenal aren't in the Champions League, Henry will leave as will others and it'll be just three teams instead of four, for the good of the league I want Henry to stay - he is just that good. It's not for any hatred of Spurs whatsoever, I'd quite like them to qualify as well, but alas, it can't be that way ;)

Well, I hope you understand that being a Tottenham supporter I really couldn't give a crap for Henry ;)

For the sake of my Dad mostly, I want to see Tottenham in Europe next season but if they aren't then I shall go back to the attitude of 'it's only a game ffs' ;) which is an attitude I appear to be able to adopt quite well but then I've had enough practice :)

And, Arseache Wenger is a nothing but a huge mobile earache donator who needs destroying :)
